8. Back Roads
Words and music by Judi Jaeger and Bob Reid © 2016
Salty screened porch.
Sunburnt, sun-kissed hair.
Ribbons down her back.
Walked as if she didn’t care.
Man walked on the moon.
Peace and love in the air.
Soldiers on the screen.
Dying on the ground over there.
We were born to save us.
Torn from the ones we trust.
Love was not enough to save us.
To save us.
Flip flop feet.
Back lot, back-stop days.
Silver threaded blouse.
Childhood brought up in the haze.
Youth hung in his eyes.
We had a reason to believe.
Shattered in the night.
Hope was left lying there to bleed.
We were born to save us.
Torn from the ones we trust.
Love was not enough to save us.
To save us.
We were born to save us.
Torn from the ones we trust.
Love was not enough to save us.
To save us.
We were born to save us.
Torn from the ones we trust.
Love was not enough to save us.
To save us.
Love was not enough,
Love was not enough,
Love was not enough to save us.
To save us.
Song Notes | Judi: I grew up in Canada in the 1960s. I had had a child’s view of what was going in the U.S. in the late ‘60s and started writing this song. I asked Bob if he wanted to co-write given his own life experience growing up in California. Bob brought the grit of that time into the song. Bob: Back in the ‘60s, the Beatles were singing “Love Is All You Need”. Someone asked Pete Seeger why he didn’t sing love songs, and he replied that all of his songs were love songs, love of the Earth, love of the people, however, he said, “Love is not enough.” I wasn’t aware of his quote when we wrote the song, but I also believe it to be true.
